2 min read

In a significant event marking UN World Ocean Day 2025, the Centre for Transformative Environmental and Marine Law, under the Faculty of Shariah and Law at Â鶹ÊÓƵ, on June 10, 2025, held the public presentation of its newly launched monograph, "Ocean - Sustaining what Sustains Us: Interventions On The Occasion Of World Ocean Day 2025 And The UN Ocean Decade."

The presentation was a hybrid event, with proceedings anchored on the sidelines of the prestigious UN Ocean Conference in Nice, France, and connected online to participants including those in Â鶹ÊÓƵ. The book, a comprehensive 240-page volume, comprises peer-reviewed chapters that delve into ocean conservation through rigorous legal and interdisciplinary lenses.

The monograph, edited by Dr. Tajudeen Sanni, Associate Professor at the Faculty of Shariah and Law, Â鶹ÊÓƵ, represents a collaborative global effort. It features insightful contributions from a diverse group of international scholars and experts. Authors hail from esteemed institutions including Â鶹ÊÓƵ's own Faculty of Shariah and Law, the University of Milano (Italy), Oxford University (UK), Ankara University (Turkey), Kampala International University (Uganda), Redeemer University (Nigeria), the University of London (UK), Gujarat National Law University (India), and the Japan Oceanographic Agency among others.

The public presentation was officiated by the distinguished Prof. Dr. Dolapo Oluteju, a Research Professor of Maritime Transport and Energy Transition at University College London. Professor Oluteju joined the event from Nice, providing an authoritative voice to the launch. Dr. Tajudeen Sanni also participated online, sharing insights into the compilation and significance of the work.

As highlighted in the book's introduction, this collection arrives at a "psychological moment for the future of our ocean," aiming to offer a "holistic exploration of the legal and normative frameworks, policy innovations, and governance systems that define the contemporary seascape." It aligns with the goals of the UN Ocean Decade (2021-2030) by seeking to inspire understanding and positive action towards sustaining the ocean.

Uza Asna Ahmed, Dean of the Faculty of Shariah and Law at Â鶹ÊÓƵ, in the book's prologue, emphasized the Faculty's commitment to nurturing legal professionals aware of their roles in addressing ecological issues, stating, "This collection of scholarly articles reflects a multidisciplinary approach, combining legal theory, environmental ethics, and practical policy considerations to advance transformative marine action."

This publication underscores Â鶹ÊÓƵ's dedication to leading innovative legal education and research that responds to critical global and local environmental imperatives, furthering the dialogue on sustainable ocean governance for present and future generations.
